Joanne Reid

Short Biography

imageIn my 35 years of writing and researching, I have written magazine articles and radio commentaries as well as informational booklets and brochures. My academic experience (M.A. in history) has given me the ability to research quickly and thoroughly. Until November 2009, I was the mayor of Souris,Prince Edward Island, Canada and have facility in research that helps in putting together proposals and writing speeches. As well, I have more than eighteen years experience (and a number of technical certifications) in computer consulting and training for private industry as well as various levels of government.

My strength has always been turning technical mumbo-jumbo into easy to understand language.  I am fast, accurate, and obsessively nit-picky about details. I’m also an easy-talking writer. It’s not that I have a high opinion of my abilities, it’s that I have a lot of experience. According to Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers, anyone can be an expert in any skill if they have devoted 10,000 hours to that skill. I’ve done that – and more.  There were times when I turned out about a quarter of a million words annually.

That is where I have been. This is where I am going – changing my focus toward lengthy, meaty articles, with strong research and interesting insights. In other words, I am concentrating on writing fat content with Web Content Studio.

Getting Burned Out Doing it All Yourself? Should You Outsource?

Outsourcing is a recent solution for internet marketers even though it began with factory work. The interest in finding a talent pool to carry out what used to be routine business work has blossomed in the past few years. This article is not going to go into a long-winded explanation of all the ins and outs of finding specialized skills from outside your region. Instead, it is going to provide an overview of the advantages of outsourcing. There is a growing debate on the pros and cons of delegating work to service providers and for some people the advantages of offshore outsourcing marketplaces are immense and well worth the learning curve involved.

Why Would You Outsource?

If you are a small business located in a low-population area, chances are good that you should opt for outsourcing. Aside from not having the funds or the infrastructure to hire and house and maintain all the staff you need with all the technical expertise required, you also are in a location where finding the right in-house employee is likely a huge challenge.

Online businesses can really benefit from outsourcing. It places them in a strong competitive position and relieves the business owner from having to be a Jack (or Jill) of all trades. Let's be realistic. Who among us can write, sell, design, create, implement, advertise and keep the paperwork straight in perfect harmony? Add in technology and software processes and you run into issues that without the proper expertise could really harm your business processes. Maybe you have some idea about some of these things but you would be a very rare person if you were a wizard at all elements of running a business. Without quality output, you run the risk of losing your business.

You already outsource some tasks such as plumbing, car repairs, and hair cutting. Business is the same thing — you are much better off having a dedicated outsource provider deliver speciality resources as they are required rather than having employees on salary even when they are not required. Lower labour costs mean a great deal as you are likely looking for service profitability. The effects of outsourcing can be seen in productivity, time saving and money saving operations.

What's the Downside?

There are a few reasons not to outsource and these could outweigh the advantages. Outsourcing pros and cons always need to be balanced out to see which is the right choice for you. One of the primary disadvantages of outsourcing is that some things you just have to do yourself. A couple of good examples are cash-flow management and dealing with customers. While some of the basic customer relations can be turned over to a third party service provider, many customers like (and need) the personal touch.

Another of the big cons to outsourcing is the risk factor involved. Lately there has been a growing debate about this. Because of all the attention that has been focused on outsourcing, some people have rushed into offering this kind of service and some just are not all that good at providing services as promised.
This can be especially difficult if you are a bit of a control freak. Outsourcing effectively involves hiring the right person and training that person to do things your way. This can be a rocky terrain. Even if the person is willing to learn, you have to be willing to teach and sometimes we know how we do things but we have no way to putting the instructions into words.

What to Do?

Analyze the spot where you need the most help and do a little research on outsource effectively. Go slowly and be open-minded. Know your reasons for choosing this business model. See how that works and then build on that success (if it is a success) and delegate a little more of your work until you hit that happy place where you're benefiting big time. The pros of outsourcing can easily outweigh the cons with a little diligence. If you are nervous, you can start working with an outsourcing partner who knows the ropes.

  1. Definately worth trying before you do any backlinking schemes, because good fat content can easily get you ranked and then backlinking becomes less risky.

  2. Joanne’s description of her writing proclivities sounds a lot like mine. On the other hand everybody has always loved my style *except* editors. She seems to have overcome that particular strain of difficulty. .. Oh, and not to be outdone, I ran for the city council once. Got whipped for fair. Jeez.
Back to work. Always shoot for 100.

  3. Andy, I’m very interested in your Web Content Studio but cannot afford the one-time cost of buying it. You had mentioned offering a multi-payment option or a monthly subscription, have you made any decision on those options.

I could look through some past issues of the newsletter but find it easier to just ask you here 🙂

Thank you for this great newsletter Andy,

    Fran
